Tancho

Tancho koi are among the most popular of all koi varieties. The Tancho classification differs from others in that it contains koi from different varieties, namely Kohaku, Sanke and Showa – but have one distinguishing feature – a red mark, or tancho on the head.

Colours
The hi marking should be of deep red. The white on any Tancho is very important because it provides the background for a very startling pattern. Sumi markings on both the Tancho Sanke and Tancho Showa should be deep ebony in colour.

Patterns
The distinguishing factor about the Tancho is the hi marking on the head, combined with a lack of hi elsewhere on the body.

Body
The body pattern varies depending on the variety concerned.

Tancho Kohaku: The hi marking on his head should be the only markings visible, with a snow white body.
Tancho Sanke: The only hi marking should be on its head, with the rest of the body black and white.
Tancho Showa: This koi combines the black and white pattern of a Shiro Utseri over its body and head with the Tancho hi marking on its head.
